If you want a cheap, auto, 4WD, then take a look at the Mitsubishi Galant/Legnum VR-4, can pick them up for around £1000-1500

Apologies if this sound patronising but have you considered winter tyres? Would they make any difference on the soarer in the winter?

Ive seen some videos on your @hondansxr - and they seem to work better than normal tyres.
There was one where there was race with an e46 m3 on winter tyres and a normal saloon on all weathers and the M3 ate him!!!
