I added some stuff, 2.5" exhaust, 68mm TB, etc..

Yeah your probably right. I get 24 - 25mpg now after the work I had done whereas I was getting 26 - 27mpg before but it's developing an extra near 50bhp. If I drove it to it's previous old limit (5500rpm produces the same power a 7200rpm before) it probably would have better mpg but also that's not an increase in compression.
Higher comp gives a more efficient burn as the fuel in the cylinder is squeezed harder and there is a better thermal efficiency from the burn. As I said originally, how much gain is another story and as you said it will depend you how drive afterwards too
