Re: Macky's Type-S : Methanol Injection :D

Hey all,

If you look back at the last update you will see that i posted a few pics of a mystery mod i had done. Well, the previous owner

It is a water/methanol injection kit which amongst other things, claims to boost performance

So i decided to put these claims to the test!! Unfortunately, a dyno was out of the question due to money constraints, but i devised my own wee experiment to see if there were any performance gains.

So, i decided i would do a 30-70mph acceleration run, one run connected, one run disconnected, to see if there was any difference in time. I chose the same road and ran in the same direction, only a few minutes apart, to try keep as few variables as possible. I also decided to run in 3rd gear, to avoid adding a gearchange which could affect the time, and also so that i had VTEC and non-VTEC running.

Are you ready for the results? Well, to be honest i wasn't expecting there to be any difference at all in the times. I thought i noticed improved throttle response and more pull in VTEC but was i imagining it? I also thought i was a bit slow on the stopwatch stopping on the connected run. So imagine my surprise when i recorded the following:

System disconnected 30 -70mph : 10.5 sec

connected : 9.8 sec

Obviously this was a pretty unscientific experiment but i was genuinely trying my best not to sway the result and did it honestly and if anything was slow with the stopwatch on the 2nd run. Only a dyno run will tell the true picture but may go some way to explaining the dyno printout i have for the car recording 240BHP?

On reading up on the benefits of the system, a couple of things stood out. Methanol is an excellent cleaner and it is thought will greatly help with the smooth running/condition of the engine. Another, was that although power claims are disputed, another benefit was that engine exhaust gas temperatures were greatly reduced for all revs.

i wonder what will happen if i actually increase the methanol mix from 1 part methanol/ 9 parts water???

What injection system is it? How much does it use?
Its good for cooling Intake air temperatures and boosting octane to 108ish when 50water/50meth.

The injection system is quite simple. It was bought from Invo Auto in the uk but I reckon they were just a distributor as the bottle had Jap markings engraved for filling levels etc.
it does say on their web site that for best results you should run 1part methanol/ 9 parts water, but the website is ancient and the company went bust years ago.
Methanol was only £3.50 for a litre and I only used 100ml. The reservoir should last at least four weeks use so pretty inexpensive to maintain.
Similar systems from AEM cost over £300!

This is very interesting :-) You gonna dyno it at the national meet?

Unfortunately I won't make the national meet and a dyno probably won't happen until the end if the year.
Unless there are generous donations to the scientific cause haha! [SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH AND SMILING EYES]

 That gives absolutely no time frame. Do you drive 3 miles in 4 weeks or 400miles? ;)
Because obviously it uses the meth etc continuously like fuel. Im just wondering do it last a tank full of petrol. The more you rev the quicker it uses it.

Sorry Ratty, that was a bit vague haha!

I filled the 1ltr bottle with 100ml methanol and 900ml distilled water. This lasted for about 700 miles and wasn't completely empty when I refilled.

The application was originally designed for turbo cars as they usually use an inter cooler but the same principles work for N/A cars too :D
