Those type really struggle with low torque values, I prefer a beam type torque wrench personally, the're cheaper and less likely to fall out of calibration too.
Also, regarding the use of silicone sealer, the manual shows where you should use it, none on the spark plug seals, and a little in the corners of the half moons, doing it this way I've never had a problem. As little amount as you can is best, too much can squeeze inside and end up floating inside your engine. The manual also shown the sequence that you should follow when tightening the bolts.
