Mushroom universal airfilters from halfords?

Post by Peachy » Mon Mar 11, 2013 6:56 pm

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... 65660#tab4

As a few of you will know i had a spilt airfilter pipe so couldnt use the standard k&n filter in the orginal air box. Had to cut back the pipeing and had put on a cone filter. This didnt fit probably though so have been to halfords today and brought and installed the above "mushroom universal airfilter."

Anyway just want to know what they are like overall, and if they are better than a standard Halfords cone filter retailing at £29.99?

I brought this for £32.99 as i had little other option as the cone filters wouldnt fit and had little space to breath.

So basically this is the only filter i could use [to a large degree without paying bigbucks for a k&n or pipercross full induction kit which i wouldnt be able to afford at present anyway]

What can i expect from this universal filter, if anything at all? Are they better than the standard cone filters and box filters, and what are the benifits and negatives. I will be using this even just for the short term, as i have another rubber pipe ordered where i will then go back to my k&n box filter if it isnt very good. If it is good i will stick with it [doubt it will be though lol] and keep the rubber pipe for backup when it arrives! At least the filter is breathing really well again and no air is being sucked though gaps like the other cone filter which was not ideal at all  :o

Any good info would be good guys, thanks again Peachy

Expect it to be making less BHP than the OEM Honda setup.

A universal kit is fine to get you out of a spot but put it back to standard ASAP

based on what?

air filters on n/a setups offer little in terms of performance on a standard engine IMO over the years ive tried all sorts of different filters, at the moment ive got a universal filter on mine as it wasnt worth buying anything of higher value as im going turbo soon, until i see fair, definitive proof that "this filter is better than that filter by x ammount of bhp" i dont think ill ever buy an expensive filter again.

on a n/a engine of our size your talking probably 2-3bhp anyways :?

Oh i forgot to say whats the difference between this universal mushroom airfilter[like the one i have brought] and the universal conefilter i had before? Want to know this more than the latter!!!

Also what makes a full induction kit much better than all the above and a airfilter in the standard box?

This might me gospel to some of you but i dont know myself, even though i know a proper induction kit made for the right car is far better-Just not sure why!

Im learning as i go along you see, as when i joined lude generation knew sweet fa about performance for cars and how it ticks over.

it really depends on the car mate, mugen made an airbox for the integra and i guess if you dyno'd a teg with that fitted compared to one with the above universal filter fitted you would see a difference because the mugen boxed filter wont draw in any heat like the universal will, but your looking at a 2-300 quid difference in price.

the only thing you need to really keep in mind is flow rate with filters but in the real world id guess you'd actually struggle to get a filter with a poor enough flow rate to hinder performance on a standard engine

for instance, a "full induction kit" from the likes of k&n for the prelude is a filter with a small extender pipe so hardly anything radically changing the intake at all apart from losing the air box. on the other hand an aem long ram moves the filter to down in the front bumper but again, your looking at twice or three times the cost for what, a few hp and a high chance of hydro lock

Pretty sure I remember that H22 Mugen induction thingy that sold on eBay for just over 800 quid?!

It was just advertised as a H22 Mugen CF airbox thing, it was huge, battery would need relocating.

Pretty sure the thread was on here, maybe on PUK. Must've been 12-18 months ago.
