Ah, maybe you have to short two wires at that box to convince the car you're in park?

Yeah thats what i was figuring, but its strange its only when the 2 wires are connected to the reverse switch. it was fine with the whole grey connector (which has all the auto wizardy wired to it) unplugged and just the brown 2 wire plug in which prevents the car from starting if unplugged.
Also after just reading a thread on another forum, i think i may have made a bit of a boob with the wiring to the switch, as i ran wires from the switch through the firewall and under the carpet to the center console where the shift position box was, when i looks like i could have just run them to the connector under the bonnet.
Doh!

So i checked the wires today and im pretty certain i have used the right ones, i was worried i had done it wrong after looking at the manual, but it seems ok.
And strangely now the key comes out fine with the box unplugged. maybe i just have a dodgy ignition barrel or something.
And here is a video of the noise i get when i engage reverse, happens even with the engine not running.

Some sort of "Careful - you're in reverse!" warning for the driver? Wouldn't put it past the japs to do that, the JDM cars have alarms for everything!
