White smoke

Post by zombie tickler » Wed Apr 03, 2013 4:39 pm

Ok now i think i have a new problem, i have white smoke coming out of the exhaust, i am unsure of how often etc etc as i havent been able to drive it much and have just dropped it of to have the electrics looked at.

Question is whats it most likely to be on a prelude 98 2.2 vti tiptronic

Is it only on warmup or does it happen even after driving for a while? It could be, and most likely be, condensation in the exhasut. My 5th initially chucks out a load of white exhaust.

Short journeys + cold mornings = white smoke and mayo in the oil cap.
Take it for a blast!!! :vtec:

Ah k thanks guys, its not had a good run i bough it last week and its been stood for nearly 2 years, iv only driven it a couple of times as i think the alternator is dead i think, currently at a garage getting looked at.

But when i get it back it will have a good service and a good run (treated like its being run in for a bit)

Cold weather/warm up it's condensation. If it continues it's coolant entering the combustion chamber. Check for head gasket leaks. Oil in the coolant reservoir, or milky coloured oil (pictured), which is coolant in the oil. A compression test can also help you narrow down where the leak may be... like in my case, between cylinders 3 and 4.

Have a sniff around the tailpipe, if it smells sweet, it's coolant.

If you do a compression test, have a look at the spark plugs. They will show signs of burning coolant as well.

you will be fine with a good quality semi synth 10w-40 - thats the budget option of course ;)

u might be better doing a couple of oil changes with cheaper oil as above before putting the good stuff in - this is just because the car has been sat for a while so you want to get as much of the old oil out.
