Engine stutter on sprint track

Post by chrismc » Thu Apr 11, 2013 8:07 pm

Suffered this on track at Curborough on Tuesday a couple of times. Felt like the engine momentarily cut completely :(

Occurred during a fast direction change left to right doing an indicated 7k+ rpm. It definitely wasn't hitting the rev-limiter though

I did wonder if it was losing VTEC (I don't have a baffled sump) but was only on road tyres & not going really quickly. Checked oil level afterwards & it was right at the full mark!

I also thought maybe fuel starvation- but had just over 1/2 tank?

Didn't occur anywhere else on track....

Anybody got any other ideas?

Have you checked the oil level after it cooled down as I suspect you suffered from loss of Vtec due to low oil level. It feels like its holding back all of a sudden.....

I've had that kind of starvation not infrequently on an old Peugeot 309 (Petrol carb) and a new Volvo S40 (Diesel) directly after long (relatively!) high G corners (Normally 270ish degree), sometimes with a fair bit of fuel in there, although maybe not half a tank. Not sure if you should discard starvation completely? No idea what Ludes are like for it as I'm new to mine, but it wouldn't surpise me if a hard left/right could cause a momentary blip in fuel - especially if it was repeated at the same place?

Others will know more, doubtless.

Good luck with it.

Yup! Left it to cool down and double-checked the oil level & found it bang-on the top mark!

Il probably change fuel filter & clean the VTEC solenoid screen. Can't think of anything else

Chris, you need a baffled sump mate. You are dropping pressure momentarily which is dropping vtec out.
Also, run it 5mm over max mark - cold - for track use

Thanks Rich

A baffled sump was on the shopping list when I get some proper track rubber- but if its already needing one that's fine :-)

It's that new suspension, diff & geo making it corner faster that's causing the issue then! ;)
