Aerodynamic enhancements ?

Post by Mudgey » Thu Apr 18, 2013 3:25 pm

Hello,

Anybody played with aerodynamics on a 5th gen? Any counts less on your cd ratio will only help motor way fuel economy! Anybody got any ideas on what we can do?

Things I have in the works/thinking of doing:

1. Upper Grill Block.
2. Fully ducted radiator from lower grill only.
3. Full under tray, as much as I can get away with safely, allowing enough ventilation for exhaust and fuel lines.
4. Smaller wing mirrors or wing mirror delete - replace with camera's or inboard mirrors, though not at the expense of £300 or it looking gash!
5. Higher pressure in tyres.
6. Adjustable cold to hot air intake - the hotter the incoming air the lesser the pumping losses.
7. Moon discs for the alloys - tho not sure I like the idea yet - could always run flat perspex covers?!

Anybody got any other ideas?

Mugen rear spoiler. Takes the drag further away from the rear of the car

Didn't have to be done and it's getting terribly old. I can't recall the last time anyone other than 4th genners started harping on about 4G rust :? inb4 it's because you drive a 5G and have age related memory loss.

As Alex said. Keep your car clean too? Less dirt weight and air-body friction. Apart from that I'm not sure. @RattyMcClelland may have some input.

Without being put into a wind tunnel it will all mean jack jobby.

From experience in model making and them putting them in a wind tunnel, what you think might improve aero actually make things way way worse. My whole Uni class were stumped as we all though of those ideas above and all made it worse. Small wing mirrors for example made it worse on the rear. Repositioning and part restyling is the key. Under car paneling to rear diffuser worked well though.

5th Gen front end has the same drag surface area as a 4th Gen so its a mute point.

in what way did the mirrors make it "worse" at the rear, increase drag, reduce downforce?

Made airflow over the rear sides massively diffused which in turn caused more drag.

Buy a Toyota GT86; it'd be more straightforward and you'd never get a 'Lude down to 0.27.

Did you try a vortex generator ratty? Just interested? I'm sure the flushing off of the underside would make a noticeable difference, it does on other cars, mudgey, be aware that if your going down the avenues of rear difuser you'll have to look at specific angles and things to get it working properly, canards are also a common upgrade for people looking for downforce but again required proper setting up,,,,, I'll text my mate that's in to ground effects for you he's always harping on about websites I can't remember, will start that in a new thread entitled "ground effects & downforce" but I'm no expert so will keep my rather naive knowledge of it out.. Ok buddy
