5th Gen Auto Box Transplant

Post by gordonlear » Sun Apr 21, 2013 10:00 pm

Back in September last year my gearbox decided to start playing up and whinning. After searching the forums and speaking to a local garage we came to the conclusion that the gearbox was on its way out :(
So i parked the car up in my garage and started to think about which was the best thing to do, i had 3 options
1. Scrap the car, No chance that was happening.
2. Manual conversion. Most people recommended this and have done it before but its a lot of work
3. Auto box transplant. Liked this idea, even though most people hate autos.

After a bit of thinking and get quotes of £1700 for a recon auto box fitted, i decided to go down the donor car route with an auto box. The hunt began on Ebay and eventually i can across this

Image

£500, last owner had owned the car for 13 years and had the gearbox reconditioned 45'000 miles ago at a cost of £1700 plus its was a BB8 the same as mine. After a drive to Whitney on the day the auction finished it was mine. :D

The next weekend it was transported back to my house as the car was registered disabled and i could not be bothered to go and get it re registered as it was going to be stripped.

The next job was to get some volunteers to help me with the mammoth task that lied ahead so on to LG it was. m@dds and Honda Hardy came to my rescue.
On a really cold Saturday we removed the engine and gearbox from the donor car whilst having supplies brought to us by my wife and daughter. She put up a really good fight and was a pain, we all exchanged a few swear words with the donor :troll: . I had no idea how big the job was going to be. But the donor car was now sitting high without the engine and box, I think Hardy though it was the massive headlights weighing the car down

My next task was to strip the rest of the car of anything that was worth having and would come off the car and get it gone, so after a few weekend and evening and not trying to annoy the neighbours to to long the car looked like this

Image

So i now have a garage full of spare parts if anyone wants anything.

The next task was to get the donor gearbox into my car, again M@dds and Hardy came to the rescue and after a day of hard graft and Hardy getting a red head, the engine was out and the gearbox was swapped along with a bit of Hardy tweeking so the car running smoothly without hunting. We eventually got the engine back in but my front and drivers side engine mounts are shot, so i will need to get some new ones (they where shot on the donor as well)

The next day we reconnected everything on the car and the only thing that put up a fight was the drive shaft.

After filling up the rad with a hell of a lot of water and antifreeze we noticed that I also need a new radiator cap as the valve gone missing, but the one on the donor car was different and would not fit.
One on the right is what i need the one on the left is from the donor.

We topped up the gearbox fluid and the engine fired up first time :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

After short test drive on the jacks though all the gears and a little test drive around our estate the car was perfect. Just needs an MOT and tax and my original alloys to be sealed to the tires and the car will be okay for Japfest :D

I will have to get the front bumper and lip resprayed but that will have to wait for a bit.

Here is a few photos of My JDM SIR and Hardys JDM Type S together, what a lovely pair of 5ths

It was from my old written-off car. That time I didn't know if I was going to buy another Prelude so got rid of the whole car. Sold to Cebul and then he sold the bumper to Gorgon.

Ludegeneration is one big parts cycle.. :geek:
