The automated system the DVLA use for catching uninsured drivers is useless in my experience... I took the insurance off my Accord when it broke in June/July, and stored it on private land. Didn't declare it SORN because I'm a plank sometimes and forget to do important things  anyhow, as my tax came close to running out I got two letters asking me to renew it. Also included each time was an information leaflet about how the DVLA now instantly catch and penalise anyone with no insurance but with tax due to their computer databases being merged. I was like, no you don't, as my car has been uninsured for months and you're now asking me to buy more tax, and haven't realised the vehicle is uninsured  efficient system they've got going :P I declared the car SORN instead of renewing the tax, if I'd remembered to do it sooner though I could've had a refund :(

I should probably add that I was never driving uninsured, the car was safely in a lock up the whole time :D

I think you do - this is why I have a bit of a dilemma with selling my car... I'm 6 months away from 2 years no claims, but I need to sell my car to raise the money for the next one. But having a gap between cars will put me back 6 months in getting my 2 years no claims as I'll have to start a new policy  loan time I guess
