Hi Folks,

So I've gone and bought an H22A from an imported BB4 which I should be picking up on Saturday for my engine swap. Seeing as it's out a '94 car though I was thinking of doing a bit of work on it before I drop it in, just to save having to replace wear and tear later down the line once it's in the engine bay and a bugger to work on! So far I'm thinking timing belt and water pump, but are there any other things that you guys would recommend replacing whilst I've got the chance?

Cant think of anything else to replace but when you are swapping new one back in, feed the loom under inlet manifold and plug your knock sensor back in while its half in, right pain in the arse to get at.

being a bb4 import engine consider the h23 manual tensioner convertion.

Does the loom not usually go under the inlet manifold? On my F series everything went over the top and then fed down by the gearbox. Looked messy though so would be good to get it all tucked away. Whereabouts is the knock sensor? I understand the UKDM cars don't have this fitted as standard?

Can you recommend anywhere that does a kit? I spoke to my local Honda garage but they were a bit useless. How far down did you strip the engine?

I did have a look at this, looks complicated though and was about £80 for a kit. Is the auto tensioner bad then?

Make sure the balance shaft oil seal retainer is there! The balance shaft oil seal has been known to pop open and drop aaaall the oil.

from most conversations that have taken place there seems to be certain things that go wrong on most h22's
one being the dizzy at 100,000 miles for example. most will do tensioner just for ease of fixing when problems occur, my lude is only on 73,000 so i have it all to come (if it happens) good call on the belt and water pump at same time cause that is the most common my sons 2.0ltr he bought just after the belt was changed and the water pump went within a month cause they had not done it at the time.

There is a loom that goes under the inlet manifold, its a pain in the arse, there is a black support bracket from the block to the underside of the inlet manifold and the loom feeds through this. If you dont feed it through while dropping the engine in, be preapred for a few hours of swearing.

Like Jozefsan said do all the seals including them cam end cap and you might as well do the valve clearance whilst your at it. Once youve done all that and fitted new belts and water pump, balance shaft seal retainer and manual cambelt conversion you should be good for at least a decade
Or you may just want to do the basics belts and water pump and see how it goes but you will kick yourself if you need to do any work on it further down the line. :)

Right definitely doing the seals then, seeing as that's what killed my F series!!

Had a quick look on the wiki but I couldn't find anything about valve clearances. I'll take a look through the forums in a bit. I'm really keen to just sort everything in one go whilst I have the block out, should hopefully mean that I have plenty of trouble free miles ahead of me after the swap. Guess I'll know more once I get the block here, can crack it open and see what's what. Time to buy some parts to get ready I think!
