H22A in a Gen 3?

Post by CrunchyAdams82 » Sun May 12, 2013 8:42 am

Alright Peeps,

Thanks again to all those who contributed to a good day out at Japfest! Thoroughly enjoyable & a decent turnout too. :) Look forward to the next meet. :)

Ok, Just an enquiry really. Much of my love for Honda is based on the magic of Vtec. I have never been interested in a 2L or 2.3L engine because if i'm honest with you, they just don't excite me. And excitement is what it's all about for me. I love to drive, it's my one true passion.

So, obviously at some point over the next few months i'm going to be in the market for a new Lude. I'd actually been toying with the idea of getting a retro Civic & planting a 2.2 in it. Badass. But awesome as that would be, it would be better to stay a part of Ludegeneration I think. Good community & all.

The thing is, I love retro, early 90's Jap cars. They are rarer, and have more character imo. The only thing that can let them down a little is the engines. Underpowered & lacklustre. I could easily get another Gen 4, and would still be very happy with it; i'm just pining for something a bit different. A bit special.

So I have decided that actually a Gen 3 might be an option for me. This of course depends on the answer to my obvious question. Can I ultimately whack a H22A in it without too many problems? And will LSD fit to it ok?

It came to my attention that the only Gen 3 we had on our stand was Nathan's! That's not good enough really. So i'm game for something a bit different if I can make it the car I want it to be.

B.t.w, I am aware that HondaHardy has one of these for sale atm, but I will definitely be looking for manual; whatever I decide on i'm afraid.

Hi, well it has been done before, but i'm not sure of the details. I suspect with the 3rd Gen having the B series motor, that one of the H2B kits will have been used with the transmission adaptor plate to allow the use of a B series tranny.

(QSD) says...
"The H2B Kit adapts any Honda H-series engine with complete and unmodified manual B-series drive train. From your flywheel out to the axle nut all remains B-series. No custom mounts are required. Following Honda’s reputation for precision each component has been calculated with advanced CMM. The core of the kit consists of a 6061 aluminum engine to transmission adapter plate paired with our innovative 4340 chromoly crankshaft spacer."

Someone more knowledgable will come along and give you the details I'm sure...
Its not a cheap conversion though.

As long as it can be done, that's all that matters really. If I could get it done for a half affordable price I'd get it done relatively quickly. But if it did turn out to be an epic £2000+ job, then I'd spend a little bit on the existing 2.0L to get it running really nice, & both save up and have an 'engine side project'.

The 'engine side project' would consist of H22A7 Head, H23 bottom end, then uprating everything else over the course of 12 months. Then fit it to the car once complete. I would be doing this either way. When, would depend on cost. If it's brutally expensive I'll only be changing the engine once.

If someone could give me some details though, that would be great. :)

Yeah it can be done, not many in the UK (if any?) It maybe worth looking for information on the U.S prelude forum..... preludepower.com, as I think there's lots of h22 3rd gens over there.

You need a fuel injection 3rd Gen to start off with 1st.
The EX carb versions dont have any wiring looms and if you was to H22 that you would have to install the dash harness etc etc.

So start with a B20a5 or a7 manual to make things easy.

You need the engine mounts. Innovative make them spot on.
You need new custom drive shafts. Again there is a company that makes them.
You need a H22 and might aswell get an H22 LSD gearbox. 8-)
Custom header work and exhaust work as the H22 sits ALOT lower than the B20 and clearence below on the sump will be less.
IIRC the harness works as plug and play with the h22 ecu. Or failing that its a OBD0 to OBD1 harness. (easy)

I was looking into it and one day maybe i will if i need another project.

Start with a 2.0i-16 4WS. Dont settle for less. You want the mech 4ws.

Spot on. that's just the kind of info i was looking for. As long as I know it can be done, and which model to buy initially then happy days! ;)

I've already got a H22 LSD box on 'The Dog' as well. May hang on to it after all if nobody needs it atm.
