the ATR did this to me the day I picked it up. Fine at first then stuttering in vtec and then no vtec with 6.5k limiter.

It's down to the vtec solenoid. In my case the signal cable from the solenoid had worked itself loose. Also worth taking the solenoid off and checking the filter gauze isn't clogged up with swarf as this can cause it too. Bristol_BB4, it probably happened to your due to the swarf from the engine eating itself

Sorry mate that's totally wrong, ALL 4G preludes came with cats no matter if they are JDM or UKDM, BB1 or BB4

Vtec not kicking in can be normally put down to 3 things the ECU needs to engage it

1) Correct temperature
2) Correct oil Pressure
3) Speed over 18mph

so Look for low oil, dirty filter in the vtec solenoid as a start, then start on the others

Also it's not an O2 sensor, don't earth that! You'll have a whole host of problems then!

Cat temp sensor has to be earthed. ;)

Limp mode is to save the engine, check the vtec solenoid, really does sound like that

Cat sensor is just a warning light if it gets too hot (I think) but it has no effect on the running of the car and can be just grounded to the chassis if your decatted and forgotten about

My BB4 was manufactured in '91 according to my docs, and it has a cat 8-) I believe the warning light is there to tell you if your cat is clogged as I think that's what causes them to overheat? Mine flickers on a cold start too though

Glad it's not the engine running out of oil mate, I only mention it as my Accord was in limp mode one night as the engine managed to lose most of it's oil on a dual carriageway... I ended up putting a piston rod through the block, and then the oil light came on
