In Car Camera Recommendations

Post by CARRisma » Tue Jun 11, 2013 6:40 pm

I'm wanting to get an in-car camcorder sort of thingy. Something small and compact that I'll stick to the ceiling up against the windscreen. I want something decent / reliable but I'm not bothered about having more than one camera and not bothered about it being ultra high res / HD. I'd like it to have the facility where it activates if someone prangs the car while parked or is running while the car is parked. I'd like it to have GPS too so it can record my speed.

The main reason I want one is for evidence in case some plonker drives into my car again. I have read that footage of incident is not always admissible in court. I think I read that it has to have GPS as well as being “auditable”, whatever they mean by that.

At the moment, the BlackVue DR380G HD looks rather tempting (http://www.blackvue.co.uk/index.php/onl ... gps-detail). They're cheaper on eBay & Amazon.

What do people here recommend?

this

can be used as a normal camera at shows etc or if you come across an accident that needs documenting with still shots you have it in the car charged ready to go. If you dont want the second camera dont plug it in.
Or you can just mount the small camera and put the unit in the glove box so you dont have anything obvious on show.
Lots of usability.

I know of someone who had a Blackvue and has had it nicked. £200 is a lot of dosh to have hanging from your windscreen.

Interesting topic here. After my experiences this year I am definitely considering an on board camera. £200 would be money well spent when you look at the hassle that is caused by an accident (especially if they drive off!).

I'd probably go for one forward and one backwards facing though just to be fully covered.

Haven't done any research yet (sorry) but shall watch this thread with interest :)

Another one I'm considering is this one: http://www.blackvue.co.uk/index.php/onl ... -a8-detail. Ignore the price on this web site, they're on eBay for around £40, I really don't know how this company can justify charging more than twice as much as sell for on eBay / Amazon.

Thanks for your input guys. I decided to go for the BlackVue DR380G HD coupled with a Power Magic Pro. Looking forward to getting my new toy :)

Make sure you let us know how good it is! I'm very tempted to get this one actually.

Sorry if this is a bit OT but if this is for insurance purposes, do you know if your insurance company will actually consider the footage?

Only ask because a while ago I'm sure I heard something about a crime or some kind of 'incident' occurring and either the police or the insurance companies basically said because of x clause or whatever law, the footage would not be considered. So it was completely ignored for all intents and purposes and hence just for youtube I guess :?

Yes, I checked with Sky Insurance during the week. I think some insurance companies insist it must have GPS so the vehicle speed is reported. Also needs to be auditable, whatever the means. Those drokk heads at Adrian Flux approve this particular model.

Here it is fitted:

And here's what it recorded yesterday:

The original quality is much better / sharper. That video was uploaded to Facebook last night and Facebook understandably degrades videos. Also, I chose to turn off the sound recording, just a personal preference.

Those two pieces of Velcro are where I attached my radar & laser detector (Snooper S5-R).
