Dunno ... apart from the cost of the ferry (and getting to Dover for many folk), you can live fairly cheaply on the continent - probably more so than in the UK, and it's warmer. Campsites, cheap supermarket petrol, even cheaper Luxembourg and Swiss petrol (especailly if you can hop across the border to Switzerland without touching a motorway - they nobble you for a year's motorway tax as soon as you hit the border on one).
