Or is it even necessary? Surely not all h22s were susceptible to front balance shaft seals wandering?

Mine popped out recently and I lost a lot of oil very quickly luckily I was parked and not on the motorway

Great, so I dont need to undo the crank pulley and have everything taken off again?

I'm driving this car to Paris on Friday and it's currently in bits...

You'll have to take the bottom pulley off, as you need to remove the cover behind it to get to the pulley, though you won't have to remove any of the belts and stuff.

See if you can borrow a battery (or air) powered impact gun, I used one to get my pulley off and it was easy! No need to try and hold the pulley still while removing the bolt.
