Fitting the shortie/S2000 filter (gives 3-4psi increase IIRC?) isn't IMO the right way to go though. If you're down on pressure using the standard filter then surely something's amiss, if it is that of course. You could use it as a rough eliminator I guess but it technically isn't a Prelude spec part. If it doesn't run right on what is supposed to be there... etc.

True, but I'm thinking that the current oil (5w40) isn't building enough pressure to correctly activate the VTEC solenoid.
Without changing the oil, I could replace the filter if I allow the engine oil to drain to sump.
Using the shorter filter could increase pressure slightly, but then again, I can't see it being enough.

There will be no issues with 5w40. That will be fine. I now use gulf comp 10w40. Oil turns black after a few thousand miles anyway.

I would change the filter again for an OEM one or a hamp. Check oil level on a warm engine, check VTEC solenoid.

5w40 fully synth in mine for the last few changes, and no issues at all.

Get the code, and then we'll see exactly what's up.

Right guys, just got home. Pulled the code.
Code 17. Which is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor).
How has this gone? And why would it have gone?
Any advice again, much appreciated.

Break between the top of the gearbox and the ECU then. Check the plug on top of the gearbox first. Is it an import?

You've quite possibly spilt oil on the VSS plug, which can be a bit iffy on cars this age anyway.
I would start by taking off the plug, checking you have good clean contacts and no breaks/brittle bits of wire.
