its not normally a good idea to ask the guy with the specialist combat training to tell you why he went into one of the toughest and meanest fighting forces in the world that basically take all comers no questions asked.

unless you is real brave lad?

Not sure if its the same nowadays. not sure you can go anywhere no questions asked anymore. Somalia maybe...

Mmm I don't know... bet part of his training wasn't to live with my mum for 16 years

I imagine it's not the same now though, what with the age of no-privacy and all.

Are you suggesting the legion is run by the NSA?

No I'm suggesting that someone somewhere will always know. As merc said, you can change back after 12 months. Very incognito

There will be places you can operate as a free agent but you would need to be drokking hard as nails and basically be faster, stronger and more brutal than all the other fast, strong brutal bastards about the place. sooner or later they get the pitchforks out though.....

Like I say, Somalia or Africa basically. Or Cambodia still here or there.

Is it a coincidence that mercutios name gets shortened to M.E.R.C.

lol your right LLL that's the way it was they took everyone thieves, murderers, rapists, the lot they cant really do it now if you have an Interpol warrant out then your toast really but other than that your golden so long as you pass selection.
It used to be so easy to join you just had to be breathing and able to march up until the 60's then they got professional they had to they got seriously beat in Vietnam/Cambodia while the brits got off lightly with there hearts and minds campaign the French were always seen as arrogant and because the officers were French it rubbed off on the legion despite what individual legionaires did for the locals.
The Vietnamese supported by Chinese regulars nearly did for the legion but also in a way added to the legion's reputation of fighting under impossible curcumstances.
Like I said read about dien bien phu sounds like a French gentleman's sausage up made glorious by individual bravery.

I joined because I had just gotten out the air force regiment was rtu'd during selection by an army unit that is supposed to be the best in the world because I was a little to shall we say enthusiastic plus my record of hitting people wasn't good
I was never a Mercenary although I was given and sometimes still get offers from private security forces, executive outcomes used to come calling a long time ago I cant keep track of a lot of them now they change names so often but iits normally people I have served with that come knocking with offers, I don't take any up I am nowhere near fit enough and after over 700 jumps 500 being combat jumps 200 of them being night jumps and about 30 of those being under fire my knees and ankles wont take a lot of punishment anymore
So I am happy to be who I am now I have no interest in fighting other peoples battles anymore I see enough faces every night without adding to them although there is still room for one or two more

Nice to know we have you on our side merc :D ;)

God forbid you should be on the other side :o

Thats a lot of jumping out of perfectly good aircraft (i am presuming none of them were about to crash  :? :? ).

respect for the amount of jobby you will have gotten yourself into and then obviously got out of intact, more or less. It takes a special kind of crazy to jump out of a plane on a frenchmans order. ;) :10:

So basically as long as interpol dont care about you and you can do the bleep test you can still do one.... hmmm, interesting.

no bleep test buddy much much further than that

and no respect needed buddy you do what you do because you have to do it at the time the only thing that sets legionaires apart and the thing that i liked was there was no surrender and no one left behind and no one complained about helping a brother and it was like a true family i have friends from my time in the raf i have family from my time in the legion.
While you cover the man next to you in the forces over here you know that should the jobby get thick and hot theres an even chance your on your own your an acceptable loss and your mates may be wanting to go get you they wont be able to.
The legion a whole company will run a gauntlet there and back to bring a brother home while you may be politically expendable militarily and personally your not.
Thats why actions like dien bien phu and camerone are seen as special, hell any mission taken on by the legion is seen as a holy mission at dien bien phu men kept parachuting into a hot lz by night to reinforce a bastion because the whole garrison including wounded couldnt be withdrawn eventually after all wounded were removed and the dead buried all while still under daily attack the remnants of the garrison marched out ahead of the attacking viet/chinese army the viets/chinese paid dearly for the valley.
