When you say they wont balance up correctly, do you mean that it is harder to centre them when trying to get the four studs in? Or do you mean they would be unsafe? Do the studs not hold the wheel anyway?
I had OZ wheels on a V6 once. I think that the centre of wheel may have been bigger than original as the wheel did not sit before you got 1 stud in and then another. Thoughts appreciated......just fire from the hip if I am way out here :)

the wheel sits central on the hubs so needs to be an exact fit. the nuts keep the wheel flat to the hub. if you do not have spiggot rings then the wheel will rotate off of it central axis.
