ditto unfortunately, I left in 1997 so I'm afraid my reference text book knowledge is a bit out of date. I had a loft clear out when I moved about 7 years ago I think the books went then, sorry.
Also when it comes to file conversions, I'm the first to be reaching for google to find a free converter - I've very little knowledge there I'm afraid.

I'm sure you've prob already checked this out but, there may still be a splattering on ebay as students look to sell up now they've finished?

Also if a book has been supersceded recently then amazon is great for cheap 2nd hand.

I would not worry about edition numbers too much for *some* books as they seemed to come out every year. Alberts was always recommended to me though - check edition date as there is quite a gap between these. I quite liked Lewin's 'Genes', I found this good to follow.
Also it depends what you are looking for, my biochem/pharma wasn't as good as mol bio so I always found some smaller reference books quite useful e.g.
or

depending on budget.
basically these things are bloody expensive unless you shop around. Best bargains are end of term normally, thats where I got a lot of my final year books.

My best tip though......get a list of academics (pref unis close by) give them a bell. Flatter a bit, say you liked their X paper, then ask what they would recommend specifically for your needs but stress that you are skint and near by. At worst they will recommend the latest list. At best they might know of a few books lying around or know someone who does. (their latest intake of PhDs might needs some cash and not need their text books?)

For me the main reason to get a text book (and I was ultra anal as a student as I was completely skint) was to refer to it often - so I needed it to be easy find a topic and to follow what they meant. Might be worth getting the help identifying the relevant books then having a nosey at the library - If they are written in impossiglish then prob not worth the investment.

Good luck!

Another brilliant post, thanks 8-)

Yeah I have that Rang & Dale in my watch list, although it is one of the ones that I have a digital copy of. The Alberts is 5th ed and I have Genes 9th ed, so both the most recent editions, but as you say it doesn't always matter when they come out every year - the fundamentals are unlikely to drastically change in most cases.

I do much prefer having a physical copy though, but budget does come into it unfortunately. There's a second hand bookshop not far from me that actually has some brilliant books, picked up this http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle ... 35455.html for 3 quid, as new condition. I can understand people selling up books etc as their knowledge grows and I guess exceeds the book, but dictionaries are always a fantastic thing to keep IMO, handy to refresh without having to read tomes.

A lot of the books I'm looking for are a bit above the level I'm currently at though so I've held off buying them unless they're essential, but it can't hurt to get a head start on next year's material.

Admittedly I hadn't thought of having a browse towards the end of the year, good shout.

Hi,
I had a search and talked to my wife. We uncovered a couple of books.
Organic Chemistry (hardback) - McMurray
Physical chemistry - Chang
mol Bio of the Cell - Alberts (2nd ed)
I'm sure there is a micro book somewhere but cannot put my hand on it.
There is also an A level Biology book that was kept because it was referred to often.
How far are you from Sandhurst (Berkshire)? They're yours if you want them.
