Up until the early 1900's a lot of Europe still drove on the left, or had no legislation regarding which side of the road should be used

Historically left hand traffic has always been the preference though, mainly because when travelling on horseback if you're on the left then if you need to fight then your right hand is on the side of traffic... Most people are right handed so this is convenient

even these days when we don't need to sword fight anymore, it's nice to be able to flip people off out the window with your right hand
