Gear ratio guru's

Post by GreenyUK » Sun Jan 05, 2014 8:33 pm

Ok folks can some explain this to me it's all a bit boggling for my simple mind
Was sat here bored so thought I'd compare gear ratios between 4g prelude and the CTR as on the road there doesn't seem much between them.

So the prelude.

And the CTR

Now I thought lower ratio means more torque to wheels and thus faster acceleration? So the Lude should have it beat.
Even more so for the M2B4 lsd box.

Please be gentle if I'm wrong and sound like a tool.

The higher the number = the shorter the gear.

 you've just blown my mind. Ok so a higher number means shorter gear but more torque so faster acceleration? Lol

but don't forget the relative weights of the vehicles yes the lude has lower gearing but the ctr has lower weight so it kind of evens it out

Depends on the prelude but generally ludes are heavier. Also civic have a 6 speed box and shorter ratios.

and torque, like bhp is an absolute, measured normally at the crank, and is not dependant on gear ratios, I believe.
