budget

Post by KeithB » Wed Mar 21, 2012 10:51 pm

how much on cigs
Thing is they've created such a big tax income "in the interests of stopping smoking" so what happens if we all stop smoking tomorrow? There will be a massive gap in revenue so what else would they cut to cover it?

it is a micky take only because they allways target smokers saying they are a drain on the NHS but that is what smoking taxes pay for, if everyone stopped smoking tommorow the NHS would cease to be.

As a smoker I'm more pissed about the petrol tax going up it shouldn't even exist and we pay vat on that tax as well they should be lowering the price of fuel

I await the double dip recession

^ This. I'm a non-smoker but plenty of guys at work are, they are also more annoyed at the fuel duty.
3p duty will be god knows how much at the pump.. 10p? 15p? 30p?

It's just getting damn stupid.

Dont forget, the tax threshold has been raised, so the vast majority of smokers that earn a living will pay around £220 a year less tax, so you'd have to buy nearly 600 packets of cigs at the new rate to eat that up. (I'm talking about just the extra 37ppp here)
Plus, smoking is optional, working, generally speaking isn't, so one doesn't have to spend that £220 on cigarettes.

Dbo I'm afraid I have to disagree about the NHS needing smokers, my wife is long term NHS and I see how strapped for cash and services they are all the time. Not to mention the staff not getting paid what they deserve, train drivers get more than people that save lives, because they go on strike every five minutes...but that's another rant.

I agree with you though that fuel is probably the bigger issue. :(

something needs to be done about the price of fuel. I started driving 7yrs ago and it was only 89p/ltr iirc
We need to blockade petrol stations. Or the whole country needs to get together, stop purchasing fuel for a week. Don't do any non essential driving (car pool, catch the bus, bike etc) then the petrol would back-up at the refineries and they would have so much they would have to drop the price?

The fuel price is a joke! I found receipts from a couple years agoo when it was under £1.00 a litre.

Just wait till they privatise the road network and 'forget' to get rid of road tax, even more charges for us
