Dont forget, the tax threshold has been raised, so the vast majority of smokers that earn a living will pay around £220 a year less tax, so you'd have to buy nearly 600 packets of cigs at the new rate to eat that up. (I'm talking about just the extra 37ppp here)
Plus, smoking is optional, working, generally speaking isn't, so one doesn't
have to spend that £220 on cigarettes.
Dbo I'm afraid I have to disagree about the NHS
needing smokers, my wife is long term NHS and I see how strapped for cash and services they are all the time. Not to mention the staff not getting paid what they deserve, train drivers get more than people that save lives, because they go on strike every five minutes...but that's another rant.
I agree with you though that fuel is probably the bigger issue.
