Yep, with a proper gas detector in there it likely would have flagged up CO, a small amount of hydrocarbons, and quite possibly a drop in O2.
The smell would almost definitely have been unburnt fuel.
Why didn't he pull over? Who knows, I'll bet he asks himself that now.

I'm sorry but why the hell didn't he open the window or get out after he pulled off. If I was on track and I could smell fuel id come straight in and look for a leak.
