Help with Ignition switch points please

Post by nucleustylzlude » Wed Feb 19, 2014 1:45 pm

Hey guys,

Its been a while since I even put the key in the ignition of my lude. Can someone explain what happens on ignition points 1 and 2 please before the starter?

Basically, I'm working on some electrical bits and pieces on the lude and want to check everything works ok, but I don't want to prime / pressurise the fuel system. Mainly because there is no fuel system in the engine bay, just an open cut fuel line to hose my engine down with some top class degreaser!

From what I can see in the manual, point 1 does pretty much everything switching the main ignition of the fuse board on and at the same time powers up the fuel relay so should then prime / pressurise the fuel right? From the manuals it looks like ignition point 2 is just for the A/C system, surely that's not right?

If this is the case, is the simplest way to cut the power to the fuel pump is to remove a fuse?
Looking in the fuel section of the manual and it shows under dash fuse No. 19 ECU (15A) (without SRS) or No. 23 (15A) (with SRS). This the right one/s guys? Just doesn't feel right as they say 'ECU'. I'm just skimming through the electrical section now, but if someone knows jump in please. :D

Thanks in advance.

Rob

/\ /\ This. Wont do squat then. But iirc the position 1 turns accessories on, position 2 is on after starting!! So position 2 should fire the main relay i think  :?

Removing the main relay is the obvious thing of course, but isn't it a pain to get to? Just thought the fuse might be easier. To be fair, some of the electrical work I'm doing is wiring some gauges from the A-pillar/tweeter down to the fuse box, so I'll have a few panels removed in that area anyway. I'll just do that I guess! Cheers guys.

Thebusofwoe: Definitely main relay came off ignition point 1. Once the key is at 2, surely that means 1 and 2 is powered.

The main relay is not that bad to get to. You need to get on your back in the foot well though.

Or, if the car is stripped, unplug the fuel pump?

That's fine, I'm tackling a ton of stuff in the car next week for the main fact that my seats are out and being cleaned up by our resident valet W1ggz. 8)

Makes it sooo much easier then.

That could be easier as later on (if I get all my work done) I'm changing the fuel pump and there is already access. As long as this won't damage the fuel relay? :?

I can't think how it would, it'll simply trigger and feed nothing. Make sure you insulate the connectors though!

Pull the fuse for the fuel pump!
