Cheers bud, copy and pasted over and didn't notice it. Useful tags to use though. :)

Afraid not bud, could probably keep it looking at another JRSC 4th gen build but it's still part of my plans. Havn't touched it yet and people are still warning me not to. We'll see. ;)

Cheers all - I havn't forgotten about this build. Last couple of parts still to come but can go ahead and fit other parts in the meantime. :)

I'd highly recommend keeping the power steering! The Prelude was designed with power steering in mind, in light of this the steering without any assistance is ridiculously heavy (I read that cars without powersteering are designed to make the steering as light as possible, for cars with powersteering this isnt a problem so they dont need to make it light), i.e. you won't be able to turn full circle when the cars not moving. The steering is so heavy at slow speeds you just cant turn fast enough.

Highly advised NOT TO REMOVE IT if driving the car on the roads.

It depends if your muscles can cope with turning the power steering in my opinion! I would never loose it as when my power steering belt snapped I couldn't even move my steering wheel! I had to get reinforcements!

But having no power steering and also no Air-Con, the engine bay will look awesome! Clean and purposeful!

It's not just that, the system wasn't designed to be driven without power steering (although as a failsafe all cars with power steering have a mechanical failsafe so if the ps breaks you can still control the car).

As the years have progressed the steering (and all the linked components) in cars are getting very heavy hence the need for power steering, its not just an option to remove it unless you lighten the steering.

Not to mention the strain you'll be putting on the components trying to move such a heavy system with no help. Smaller cars are usually ok (and the steering isn't as heavy with the ps system completely removed) but with a bigger car like the Prelude and from what I've experienced I wouldn't risk it, especially when you're putting down a lot more power. I'd take steering safety and ease over a little bit of engine bay bling anyday :)

aims to lose the Power Steering

Post by nucleustylzlude » Sat Aug 28, 2010 12:57 am

Appreciate your comments guys but I'm not jumping into a decision just for engine bling.

Plus it's not my daily driver, it's for fun weekends, shows and track now.

My only reserve is the weight of ludes and just how hard it will actually be during low speeds. I've got what I think are some guns to move the wheel!

As for safety and comprimising the mechanics of it all - there are hundreds of people (most in the US) who have removed and ran them for years with no failures or signs of extra strain on components. In fact Rich of Performance Autoworks praises it - he ran his with looped lines for years until his very recent modifications and highly recommended me to do the same for my use.

There is three main aims to lose the PAS:

1. Enable easier installation of my supercharger kit.
2. Enable better feel and instant response of road/track handling.
3. Lose more weight from the heavy curb weight (amongst other things to go on a diet).

Main downside for me will be the hard turning for slow speeds to get in and out of my garage and pulling out of junctions. But as it's not a daily drive and I'm focusing on it as a performance project now it seems the way to go.

Well that's my current thinking - we'll see.

I have other plans which most of you would not do, and I'd feel the same if I had to drive it everyday again. ;)

Anyway, got some more waffle to write on my transmission - another essay, but hopefully educating and helpful too.

Cheers,

Rob
