MOT fail on emissions, help needed.

So i just got back from my mot, and all in all its not bad, apart from a pretty drastic fail on the emissions.

Now i was always under the impression that it was a non-cat test, and it went through as a non-cat last year at a different place, but this guy said because the first use of the car was after august 1992, that it needs to be cat tested.
As far as i could work out he was using a standard test and not a vehicle specific one.

I had a read here http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/wiki/in ... sions_Test and i found the 2.2 bb1 in the annex with the same values as what he tested the car under, but the engine capacity is listed as 1958 on the sheet. reading the flow chart it would seem that unless an exact match can be found on the database, a non-cat test should be used.

Can anyone clarify as to what test should be applied to my car? @TheBusOfWoe hoping you can give me some advice here bud!

bb1 was also over here in the uk so it can be found on the system so hes right in saying a cat test, bb4 was the exception as that wasnt available over here.

The figures for CO and HC max values are right according to 17th edition of the exhaust emissions standards. There is no BB4 on it so it goes througha as a non cat test.

Run some cataclean through the fuel system and see if that helps.

Balls! well i dont know much about it, but it would seem that the figures are a lot over? he told me its worth dropping the cat and checking the element is actually in there, as i suppose it could be hollowed out. will see if i can get another cat and run some cataclean through too before i take it for a retest.

I think your options are:

Find a friendlier MOT garage.. or one with a spare car near the emissions machine.

Borrow a cat/whole exhaust from a friend for a day.

Install LPG.

Spend hundreds on a new cat..

I'm sure there will be someone nearby with a cat you could borrow I have a jdm 1 in my garage if it's any use

well i want to run a cat for daily driving as im consious of the environment and i dont see the need to be decatted for road use. but if im already running a decat then i am a little worried i might see a drop in power if i fit a working cat!

Wiggz is the cat in good condition? are you wanting to keep it or is it up for sale? i have messaged someone else about one for sale too, im just gonna go and measure mine to make sure its not been swapped for a ukdm system at some point.

Well I don't need mine as both mine are bb4s and always go non cat test so yeah you can buy it but is yours the short cat or long one that is the question, as far as I know its fine but obviously can't guarantee that, I could always send it to you put it on if it passes pay me lol

I would have thought the car would have been a git to drive if the convertor had collapsed. When you take it off you'll see if it is just clogged up though. Does it drive a bit sluggish?

how mich do you want for it wiggz? messaged preludemanh22 as he is selling the cat and downpipe as a set for 15 quid but he hasnt got back to me yet.

also mine is the short cat, 26cm or something.

and bmcc in my opinion the car flies! im hoping its not a bored out cat as i was hoping to get a bit more power for the drag strip by adding a decat!
