Gear knob removal 4th gen

Post by c_doughty1 » Tue May 27, 2014 1:31 pm

I've read a few bits on how to get the gear knob off my 4th gen but I just can't get it off.
Any advice?

The silver bit just yanks (friction fit clips) downward, once it's detached from the actual knob, the knob unscrews.

Mine was super stiff, I needed a fat flat bladed screwdriver to wedge in the gap and slightly twist for it to pop off the bottom..

..awaits innuendo 'corrections'

So the silver block at the bottom pulls down and the silver plastic trim around the gear knob comes off with the gear knob, when you unscrew it?
So just to clarify where exactly do I put the screw driver? In between the knob and the silver plastic surround or below the silver surround between that and the chunky silver block?

From memory, the silver is one piece, so you'll need to lever between the silver and the black.

Ok so it's inbetween the silver block and the silver rim around the gear knob?

No. The silver block and the silver rim are the same piece, the block fits inside the gear knob. If you look at it you can see the black knob with silver trim at the bottom, put screwdriver between the black plastic of the knob and the silver rim, pop it down and the block will come out of the knob, the knob can then be unscrewed from the gear stick.

Looking at that picture, your silver bit has been put on upside down.

Not sure about that, as the ridge to hold the gaiter is at the top where it should be?
