Post by ddoubledanny » Fri Mar 30, 2012 9:22 pm

As above on my 4th gen vtec 4ws makes a very loud rattle like a bit of tin is in my exhaust. Checked all exhaust brackets removed all heat shields looked on the net couldn't find anything. Weird thing is its always
At 2k rpm or just above any one experienced this b4 let us know been looking and revving all day and
Still can't find where the noise is coming from

lift car, start car , keep it on 2000 and listen where is coming from

also is good to have thick heat-prove gloves so you can check exhaust, shields and parts on car

btw first thing what i will check is downpipe bracket to engine

Might be a heatshield. Could you borrow some axle stands to lift it? I had a similar problem in my golf, was getting a horrible sound due to resonance at 2,400 RPM. I found a long metal stick was handy, as you can hold it against parts to feel for vibrations - I had to do this to determine which of two metal parts that were very close together was making the noise (impossible by ear!!)

Do you have an "ebay" manifold and downpipe?

the most likely places the rattle is coming from -

manifold heat shield
cat heat shield
heat shield just above the backbox-midpipe join as it does hang pretty close to the exhaust itsself!

i had one fitted and initially had an annoying rattle, it was the bracket that attatched the downpipe to the back of the engine, did away with the bracket and the rattle went

The welds for the bracket are crap and shear off quickly, Before I put on on my last lude i had it rewelded, and the original weld was full of air, and the one on my car now has been rewelded cos it failed
