Yea to swap it for a known good one. No joke, unfortunately, there is no way to test the unit itself.

took the distributor cover off...
scorched to fook inside, the ignition coil's terminal surround (plastic tube thing) that contacts the dizzy cap had pretty much corroded away to nothing, leaving the dizzy full of dusty powder.
luckily had a spare, swapped it out and she's running fine; apart from my FITV is now jammed open for some reason :-S
