how do i go about checking valve heights? i have gained enough knowledge to feel comfortable bolting parts on and off but the engine internals remain a mystery to me!

the speed of the knock definitely changes in time with the rpm, and is constant at whatever rpm ypu have it at.
it almost sounds like something is knocking against the rocker cover.

i was going to pop it off and have a look, but bar there being a small animal trapped in there i wouldnt really know what to look for!

I have a stethoscope that appeared in my possession at Harvard Medical School. :?

Must be worth at least... 1 million dollars. LG discount of 50% if you're interested. 8-)

If by stethoscope you mean screwdriver, i have already tired that and hae no idea what im listening for

Im gonna take it to my mate to see if he can diagnose it for me.

My questions are as follows:

1: Whats the worst that can happen if i continue to drive it in its current state? anything that wont be fixable by chucking the replacement engine in?

2: Who wants to come and help me swap engines when the time comes? beer and food will be provided. maybe strippers too. cheap ones though.

3: What should i do to the spare engine before it goes in the car? maintence, mods ect?

4: what are the winning numbers for the lottery this tuesday?

if your putting an engine in you may as well change the cambelt waterpump and main crank seals/balance seal

1. Engine will die.

2. Not if you're gonna be cheap.

3. Make sure it's not attached to another car.

4. My bets are: log(1), π, R, 6.62606957×10^−34, 9.81, Graham's number

do the valve clearances - if that makes no difference then probably a spun bearing or something damaged/broke :?

Gonna undertake the valve clearances sometime this week. one question though, i understand setting TDC for the number 1 cylinder with the arrows and marks, but how do you set the other cylinders?
