It's a blurred red ellipse.

Thanks for all your replies guys. Just thought i would update you that the 'thing' turned out to simply be stuck on! No wiring, no holes anywhere, just stuck on with a sticky pad - which peeled off with ease and left no marks whatsoever :) Glad it's off now with no evidence it was ever there, but i'm still not exactly sure what purpose it was supposed to serve. There are no holes in the bottom for wiring, so it can't have ever been an antenna for anything. I can only imagine it was an aftermarket parking aid?

Is there anything stuck to the underside of the boot lid?

I will have to have a feel around with a screwdriver, as the underside of where it was positioned is recessed in the 'double skin' part. There is certainly no wiring leading to that area though. Why do you ask?

I just wondered if it was like one of those windscreen antenna's which has a mast on the outside and wiring underneath... If there's no wires going under there though then it rules that out :D

It's a fake antenna, of course. A bit like this one:-

Ages ago, you could buy fakes to make it look as if you had a car phone. Now, you can get BMW-like shark fins for the same dumb purpose.
