Front speakers in 4th gen

Post by ATR84 » Sat Nov 22, 2014 3:59 pm

I just picked up my lude yesterday and the previous owner has put some kenwood speakers with tweeters and crossovers in the rear shelf. They sound good, the problem is the sound is dragged to the back of the car.

I know people will tell me to remove them and put them in the front but I don't want to do that, I just want to replace the fronts so they sound as good as the rears. I also don't want to be mucking about trying to fit bigger speakers in there if it is going to be a faff, so I have 2 questions:

1) Is 5.25 inch the standard size up front?
2) Do 6 inch ones fit easily or should I just go for 5.25?
3) Do the standard tweeters work independently of the speaker?
4) Should I replace the speakers and the tweeters?
5) What about the tweeter wiring, isn't this going to be a pain going from the door to the dash?

Sorry about all the questions but I know you fellow lude lovers will know the answers :D

I really should know this, as this is my 3rd 4th gen but I only ever used to change the rears, but I have since learnt that is not the best idea.

Thanks
Mike

Hello mate have you looked on your head unit to see if the power is equal to both front and back? I think (don't quote me on it) it's called fader and you can adjust front and back, like you can left and right. Might be worth checking the majority of the power isn't going straight to the back, if that makes sense?

Thanks but I already checked that. The standard fronts are just very quiet in comparison. I want to upgrade the fronts regardless just need to know what to put in there.....

I have 5¼” Alpine SXE-1325S Front Door Speakers in mine. They sound great!
They fit straight into the holders without having to cut bits off.

The dash tweeter wires will already be behind the tweeter covers, even if the car has never had tweeters fitted.
Fitted as standard from the factory, probably wrapped in blue electrical tape. :ugeek:

I believe the rear component speakers are Kenwood KFC-P707's, they were a tight fit to squeeze into the original rear speaker pods, I think I needed to use the mounting adapter rings which came with the speakers. If memory serves me correctly they are 17cm speakers.

You may find it difficult to squeeze some 17cm speakers into the front door speaker mounts, I believe with use of the adapter rings you can fit them to the original door brackets, but I think the diameter of the speaker frame might be too wide. It has been a few years since I fitted aftermarket speakers into a 4th gen's doors, I didn't even try on your new Prelude.

Put the rear in the front and call it a day. No money spent and how a soundstage should be.

You can fit any size up front depending on how much skill you have. I'm running 7.1" . In my old 4th gen I had 6" jbl gtos without issues of making them fit.

Thanks Ratty but I would rather have speakers in the front and rear, I know about the sound staging theory and do agree with it, but the car came with speakers in the front and rear and would rather have decent speakers in both places. I will fade to the front slightly if I find it sounds better that way.

From this page, which speakers should I go for?

Snap.
Well, I have Blaupunkt stuff now which I'm about to change, but before I had the 6" JBL GTO's too and they are great bang for buck.

So for 100 quid or less which 5.25 inch components should I go for? They will be running off an alpine head unit.
