She's a git to start in the morning...

Post by Cutz » Sat Dec 06, 2014 10:28 pm

The Type 22 Civic has been a bit of a pain recently.

Progressively overtime it has been harder and hard to start her in the morning...well...starting after any period of time over say 6-12hrs actually...

I found my injector seals to be deteriorated (cheap rubbish) so threw them away and replaced them with Viton seals.

Fuel filter was replaced a couple of weeks ago, along with some braided line that was a tad 'kinked'.

Fuel pump is the standard H22A unit fitted into the Civic's fuel tank.

It's definitely NOT the main relay, she turns over fine, the relays do all their clicking it just seems like the fuel rail empties itself overnight so I have to rag the starter motor to fill the rail up again before she'll start.

Turn her off and then back on and it's no problem whatsoever, seems to be only after an extended period of time of being turned off.

I've got a fuel pressure gauge to drop into the AN6 fuel line this week (when i'm not shivering on the driveway!) so I'm hoping to prove or disprove my theory about the rail emptying itself overnight (the fuel pressure gauge should hold it's reading after engine off).

So I'm thinking it's one of 2 things...

1. Fuel pressure regulator bad...could be allowing to much fuel back to tank i.e. not maintaining pressure.
2. Fuel pump integral 1-way valve bad...could be failing & allowing fuel to return down feed line after engine off.

I have no signs of leaking fuel anywhere, so I'm moving back to the fuel pressure regulator territory.

Only problem is, OEM replacements for the FPR aren't cheap for such a small unit, there's plenty of cheap chinese units out there that I don't want to risk my engine for and in terms of trusted-brand performance items, an AEM adjustable FPR is about £95 :-(

I've got a ATR A7 intake manifold and my initial plan was to nick the OEM fuel pressure regulator off the rail and test it on my H22 to try and narrow down the problem...typically, the ATR fuel pressure regulator has an off-centre mounting hole onto the rail and therefore doesn't line up with the H22's rail...gay.

Anyone got any thoughts about this?
