Post by Merlin » Tue Dec 09, 2014 10:25 am

Has anyone got one of these web TV boxes? If so are they any good? Something like this:

No but if you have a smart TV and an android device you can stream to it.

I use Showbox and BubbleUPNP on my samsung tv with my android tablet/phone

Or if you don't have a smart TV a chromecast will do the same thing which can be found for £18 these days

Chromecast is great.
It's so good in fact that I use the phone or tablet iplayer app and fire it over, as it's much more reliable than iplayer on Tivo for some reason!

I don't have a smart TV or any other Android devices. I want something like this in my bedroom as I don't want to install cables for TV aerial/Sky. The free channels on the Android boxes are attractive.

Does your tv in the bedroom have HDMI? If so, definitely try a Chromecast!

I'll have a look. Any idea what TV (live and catchup) it can stream? How does it get its power? Is is simple enough for the wife to use?

Yeah having a read through the Chromecast blurb it seems this is not the kind of thing I am after. Essentially I want a cheap "Sky box" thing that will stream online content by itself, not streaming from another device. Connecting to Chromecast from an IOS device looks to be too complicated for the wife, she'll just end up not using it.

Really? Do apple make it that bad?
On my phone, I have a push to chromecast button available pretty much all the time, when I hit it it even changes the channel on the TV to HDMI 3 where the chromecast is plugged in. Nice thing is you can show photos etc from your phone too.
TBH, if it works the same way as it does on android, I'd say if she can use her phone she can use chromecast :)
