Just to close out this thread in case others have a similar problem in future I ended up replacing the sunroof mechanism. The motor was fine but the clutch was fairly worn and all of the mechanics were badly corroded. Once I'd taken the clutch out I could manually open it with a LOT of effort but decided it was easier to replace the whole lot than strip it down any further, I found a replacement on eBay for £50 which was in good nick.
One note to bare in mind - it seems the pre and post facelift parts differ slightly. Mine's a post facelift and I'm fairly sure the replacement came from a pre facelift and my interior light no longer fits
I've had to temporarily pop it in with a bit of hot glue but I'm going to have to recess the sunroof frame slightly to get it to fit properly before the bolts will go back in
You live and learn..!
