When checking for a spark, have a set of jump leads, connect one end to the negative of the battery and clamp the threads of the plug with the other end. If you do it any other way you risk accidentally losing the earth, causing a spike and frying the dizzy.

I know it sounds stupid but I've seen it done. Double check leads are in the right order if the car had been worked on 1,3,4,2. Then I'd probably check for fuel/pressure at the rail? Try some easy start and see what she does

how do we check fuel pressure on the rail? you can hear the fuel pump prime.

ecu has been swapped and its not that.
cant see any spark when doing the spark test though.
all earth connections seem good.

swapped it for my working dizzy (which i drove to Will's yesterday in) and made no difference.

anyway, we dried out the spark plugs as they were covered in fuel, un plugged the injectors and turned her over a few times to dry out the bore and then reconnected the injectors and tried again - nearly started several times but not quite.

then, got it jump started after second time pushing it down the hill - running lack a bag of crap and over fueling at low revs and idle but up at speed its seems pretty ok, so its looking like to be (after being flooded) the manifold lambda sensor at fault so this is going to be sorted next.

got it to the mechanics and then wouldn't start again
swapped dizzy and nearly turned over (so seems his dizzy is on the way out) but compression in 3/4 cylinders is vastly low, so along with the coolant he keeps losing regularly but with no obvious leak, it seems his headgasket is on the way out.

plan is to redo the valve clearances again, (hopefully) get it going, keep the coolant topped up and the car going until past japfest and then take it to mine where I will take off the head, and either swap it for my spare or get his skimmed, check the valves, seats etc., get a new head gasket on and put it all back together.
