The law states something along the lines of "secure, suitable footwear must be worn when driving a motor vehicle". Secure does not cover slippers, and suitable currently does not cover heels, but that is being changed at the moment I believe.

It is also illegal to drive barefoot.

Reasons for the above is that your foot is more likely to slip off the pedals if wearing insecure, inappropriate or no footwear.

Lol, where are the government links to confirm all the bold factual statements being made?

I am 99.9% confident it is legal to drive barefoot, flipflop, slippers, even fishing waders, as long as you can control the vehicle.

It is like operating a sat nav whilst driving. It is not illegal to press the buttons on your sat nav/stereo, mobile phone (as long as it is in a cradle and not hand hand), BUT if by doing so causes you to drive carelessly/dangerously etc you can be convicted of driving without due care, etc...

So if you drive barefoot and can drive without issues, then fine. But if you fail to brake as it made your toes hurt, or if your slipper fell of and got stuck under the brake pedal, then you could be done. But the actual act of driving barefoot, in slippers, heels, thigh high rubber boots etc is fine.

I take something for it.

I cannot remember the exact law, but it is covered as not being in full control of the vehicle.

A good friend of mine is a police officer, and he and I happened to see someone get into their car wearing a dressing gown and slippers after putting 2 infants in the car, and he went and arrested her as she started to drive off. She got points on her licence because of it, but I cannot remember how many, but she is a neighbour of a friend of mine, and she constantly bitches and moans about the points and the embarrassment whenever she see's my cop mate.

I remember just being stood there chatting with my mate whilst rolling a smoke, looked up and he was suddenly 20 feet away arresting someone!

Then she must have been done for driving without due care and attention, as it is not illegal to drive wearing slippers. If she was driving normally, i'm sure she could have contested the charge, as there would be no grounds to substantiate a conviction. The police are often misinformed where traffic laws are concerned.

My least favourite shoes for driving in are smart work shoes - the hard soles mean I just can't get a feel for the pedals  add the fact that they're usually smooth and slippery it can make my commute a real pain. Converses are my favourite driving shoes, the thin soles mean you feel really connected with the pedals. As for flip flops or slippers, I get around the problem by never wearing them  I never let my girlfriend drive in heels though, way too dangerous and knackers the footwell carpet

I'm not sure about what the law says about shoes, I thought it was illegal to drive barefoot, mainly because of the anecdote I heard before about a man getting away with driving bollock naked as he was wearing his shoes  not so sure how much I believe that but gave me a laugh when I heard it :P
