Anyone know what the deal with those little spring things on the side are?

I'm not going to buy one, I'm just curious..

They keep tension on the joint but allow some movement from the engine twisting.

..so they aren't properly attached?! When I say properly, I mean welded.

Nope, it's common with motorbike exhausts. It just relies on seat pressure I think.
