I am thinking MDF rings and something to bond it to the car - but I have NEVER used fibreglass and I am NOT a arty creative person.
I think I will just get a new door card and get a pair of smaller speakers.

Gutted is not the word.
I'm pretty certain the mdf rings I got are bigger than what you've got there (I.e. They wouldn't fit inside). I think as ratty says you might have a bit more chopping to do...! Things is, where you are now, you got nothing to bolt your speakers to so you'll need the rings. Chop more off but just keep the outside of that section of door card where the stock grill clips in.

If I get time after work tomorrow ill measure my ring and take a photo - I'm sure you'll enjoy that ;)

This is how much plastic you can remove whilst still putting the stock grills back on minus the speaker rings.

MDF spakers on the door itself at least 12mm thick and your fine. If i managed a 7.1" speakers whilst still retaining the stock grill you can put a 6.5" speaker there.
Ratty, I did consider getting 12 or 18mm rings to screw directly to the door skin, but unless I am mistaken the door card will not sit flush.

If not, i will go with your idea of cutting away even more and fitting the rings into the door cards.

The door cards will sit flush with 12mm MDF. Just bolt the MDF directly to the doors metal. The door card will fit over no problem on 6.5". As said i did this with a Seven point one inch speaker and it worked and that was 18mm mdf to clear window rails as they were deep speakers.

Oh yer i did. The magnets are huge so i made the metal larger. Also you back of the speakers needs room and air to breath so it improves performance.
Did forget to mention that.

Thank you very very very much Ratty. I think for lack my resources and time, i will just give up and get a cheaper pair of components that will fit into the doors. I will just get a drivers side door card and a pair of 5.25 VIBE components. Too much hassle when I only have a couple of hours spare to myself at the weekend.
