Prelude v DC5 R

Post by Free Ranj Egg » Fri Apr 15, 2016 9:38 am

So a friend of mine that I haven't seen for years surprises me with a visit to my house yesterday and turns up in his mark 5 Golf Gti and we get talking about cars.

He is has never driven a vtec before and as my engine was still warm I handed him the keys and said lets for a drive.

Needless to say he loved the high revving nature of the vtec and the way the engine screams. I think I just may have converted a turbo man to a vtec man.

So we are chatting about him purchasing a vtec over a beer and a pizza and he mentions that he will look at the DC5 integra r.

That got me thinking - they tend to hold their price very well but are they actually thousands of pounds better than the lude?

I get that they are a newer car, newer engine, race bred where as the lude is more of a cruiser, but I was thinking he could buy a decent lude throw some money at it and still have some change left over in comparison to if he brought an R.

Are the DC5 better than the lude to justify spending that sort of money, or am I missing something?

Depends on how you measure better. Performance wise no, not hugely different. They do have better brakes than the Lude though. The DC5 is obviously newer so shouldn't suffer from the age related issues that the Prelude does.

If I was looking for a different Honda to own the DC5 is right up there (supercharged ;)).

Yes Merlin we were talking about in a performance sense but over all as a package, so that includes power, servicing, consumables, insurance etc..

As good as the car is its £6k better than a prelude... is it????

really depends what you plan to do with it. ive driven a Prelude on the track (stock & modified) and a DC5 (stock & modified).

With the same driver at the wheel of both, the DC5 will have the edge due to the big Brembo brakes, 6 speed shorter shift gearbox and a smidge more power but hardly anything. With a good driver at the wheel of a 197bhp lude and an average driver at the wheel of a DC5, the lude would win.

if you were to mod it, a DC5 (due to the more modern engine) give you more power for less money, for instance one of the guys i know who owns one got his stock DC5 remapped with no mods at all and gained 15 bhp over stock.

if you buy one as a daily, a Prelude imo would be far cheaper to purchase & run, but a DC5 is going to be more reliable due to being a more modern car & engine, but overall the cost savings of buying a lude over a 5/6k dc5 is nonsensical imo. Also, more importantly the Prelude was FAR more fun than a DC5, i found it rather boring to drive, stock & modified :?

servicing at a guess would cost more, consumables probably about the same, insurance i have no idea sorry

Its interesting how you found a lude more fun to drive than a DC5 Drax.

I will show my mate this thread and he can make his own mind up -after all it is his money lol

Id have a dc5, if the right one came up for sale I would really consider it, but I would still keep my prelude.

If something was to happen to my Prelude Type-S... I would seriously be looking to get a DC5 (black or white). 8-)
