M2B4 Gearbox oil

Post by Free Ranj Egg » Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:56 am

Hi Guys

Which is the best oil to use for the lsd box, Amsoil or Honda Mtf?

Also where the best place I can get it for a reasonable price? Is there a specific type of oil I need to order, ie do they different viscousities?

i took a new, empty petrol can to my local Honda and asked for some gearbox oil as they didnt sell it in bottles any more, so they just siphoned some off into the can for me

Use Honda MTF3 or Torco MTF. Amsoil MTF now seems impossible to get hold of.

I can get 1L bottles of Honda MTF3 from my dealer. You can get them on eBay as well. For example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/honda-mtf-3-m ... SwF1dUTR00

You can get Torco from Nimbus Motorsport.

3L just to be safe for a fresh fill on a newly installed gearbox. You only need 2l when doing a fluid swap.

Weirdly my local motor factors recommended 10w40 for the prelude gearbox. I didn't take them up on it though

Will the 10w 40 oil work with an lsd gearbox?

Yes it will but it should be used as a temporary solution. Engine oil is designed to deal with products of combustion and has a relatively short life. Transmission fluid is built to deal with a different set of problems.

The M2B4 is a viscous diff (a fluid coupler). All the diff needs is a fluid at the correct viscosity to work properly. Its simplicity is both its biggest benefit and its greatest drawback.
