Hello All
I want to start a new project on a 3G Lude.
Buying the car is a seperate matter but I've been wrestling with engine options.
Here are my thoughts:
3G B20A7 (standard engine) with
- I/H/E
- usual port work including match/polish
- highcomp pistons
- cam
- uprated valvetrain
- balancing as necessary
- OBD1 conversion and tune
OR
H22A8 swap with
- I/H/E
- OBD1 conversion and tune (maybe)
I want an NA build.
Easy option for power is of course H22A8 which will come with easy 200hp but it's a job to fit in the shell and will be a summer daily/weekend car so driveability is also important. No matter how well you do a swap, swapping engines will always introduce unwanted niggles into a car which detract from overall experience. In addition the H22 is at least 50kg heavier based on tinternet research so it's going to affect the 3G dynamics which I'm quite worried about. Other issues include bonnet clearance and/or ground clearance.
B20A NA build really tickles my fancy but I'm worried about the power potential. These engines don't like to rev above 6.5k RPM and *only* make ~150hp stock. I don't really know the performance ceiling for these and though a peaky powerband could be remedied by adequate gearing I'm not sure there are many options for parts (cams/pistons/gears/etc) so might be stuck in a parts black hole. I don't doubt the potential of the motor but havn't seen any examples of these making anywhere near 200hp without turbos. I don't want a turbo...
P.S. I already have a H22A8 which I was gonna put in a CRX but have no space atm for that project (race car build).
P.P.S I have access to a work machine shop so small mods to OEM parts could be made relatively easily (skimming heads/boring cylinders/resizing gudgeon pin holes/etc).
I'm looking for any and all advice particularly from people who can give me a guide as to what sort of power is actually needed in a 3G to make it feels "fast". I have a BB8 manual with H22A5 now and I want it to feel quicker than that. I'm quite aware than 200hp in a 1000kg car may be excessive and I'll be happy to set my sights lower (and further justify the B20A NA build).
Cheers!
Owen
Congratulations to vtecmec for winning May/June's Lude Of The Month, with his DIY Turbo BB1 build.

Re: 3G Engine Options
Im getting my b20a7 on the road and recommishioning the engine: belts, w pump, exhaust and other various bits and parts have been a real struggle! Still cant get the stock 150bhp downpipe. The one i brought claims it is but literally half the size. Parts are hardwork for the b20a7, at least thats my experiance. Just had exhaust manifold gasket delivered from... florida, only place i could get one.
