Interesting, hadn't thought of using something special for the sliding pins. Will go and find some now I think. Been looking at a number of grease, loctite, copper grease, etc to add to my toolbox for various parts of my build. Cheers bud.

Thanks again for the advice. My brother in law and I set to it last weekend armed with the usual tools and the rewind tool. Due to my other car failing its MOT and having to spend a small fortune to get it roadworthy I had to attempt this on the uber cheap so all I bought was the rear pads (Brembo's for £22 delivered :D ). grease and copper grease.

It took us ages :x . Compared to the Mazda5 changing of front and rear pads and front discs it easily took double the time. The Mazda is so easy in comparison! Anyway having eventually managed to prize of the bound pads (nearside rear) I lubed the pins (came out easy - not the problem) and found it was the piston that was seized. Bugger! Had to remove the whole unit to try and get the piston to move. After alot of different methods we finally got the piston out (a vice required for this) we regreased the piston (prev lub was dry as a bone!) and rehoused it taking care not to damage the rubber seal. Refitted to car and..... Its pissing brake fluid - we damaged the rubber seal  I have now ordered a big red refurb kit so we can do this all again

Other side is equally problematic. While we managed to get the piston to rewind it was clear it needed lubed too. But... we couldnt get the caliper off!!! the smooth 'bolt' (beside the wire clip) that attaches the handbrake cable wouldnt shift. After a drive (which showed the nearside leaking fluid) it was obvious the brake wasnt operational as it has siezed in its rewound position  . Guess what I will be doing this weekend then :(

hmm I was just looking for a thread about seized rear callipers on a 5g as I have just found my NS rear is seized :( . The sliding pins are fine but the piston has definitely seized on one and is pretty stiff on the other :x .

After reading this I might just invest in a pair of reconditioned callipers and save myself some pain!

Yep, most definitely is good. Went to buy a tub from the motorfactors but they were out, so he gave me a bag full of the little tester sachets for free!

Giomani - yeah, I think once the piston itself is seizing then there's not much you can do unless you fancy taking the piston out. But there's all sorts of internal gubbins on the rear ones, so if you do then make sure you're in a small brightly lit room, there's a little spring you don't want to lose! It likes to fly away. And then you still have to try and get the piston smooth again.

I ordered a pair last night from http://www.carfactorsuk.co.uk as they seemed to be a reasonable price and cheaper than Brakeparts for recon units. I hope I can get them for the weekend but when I called today to ask about delivery times, noone was avaialable to take my call :? .

I post how i get on in case anyone else needs them :geek:
