that is how mine broke. a van in front of me, flat bed and a nut and bolt came off the back and crack!
didn't even have to contact the insurance company. the policy just said to ring autoglass they came and did it for £75 i had to pay them and the insurance company sent a letter about 2 weeks later asking if i was happy with the fitting service and that was it!

Can you not seal it with some silicone sealer? £3-£4 and the jobs done another couple of quid if you don't have one of those guns that force it in.

I take something for it.

Yeah, its bonded in and is structural. I won't advise a DIY job.

structual, that got me thinking, does the sunroof less ludes handle better? would it be safer with the roof down in a shunt? (from a structual point of view  ) if the windscreen is structual why doesnt it break when the car is driven to extremes? im assuming the glass doesnt actually touch the steel frame of the car and instead sits in rubber, if so how structual can it be? (keeping in mind the rubber must have some give or the windscreen would shatter):? if you have a chipped screen they often go due to the torsion effect while driving and cornering, makes you wonder how much load it really does take. if you watch a car getting crushed quite often the screen pops out in one piece, this makes you wonder about the door glass, am i safer with them up - just in case numpty desides to drive into me again 8-) :D
