An update here...

I changed the transmission fluid for the stuff recommended on the 5th gear crunch thread here. I also changed my clutch fluid which was black and horrible. Since then I haven't crunch a gear yet! I know I have only put a sticking plaster over the real problem but it seems I have bought myself some time :)
