CF roof skin or CF sun roof plug

Post by A1ex » Sat Jun 30, 2012 7:54 am

As you may have guessed I'm deciding which to do.

The plug will obviously involve less fibre but will also require welding & lots of sealant to install it.

The skin would allow you to take the sun roof out too, won't require welding, would add to the rigidity of the car and if you've got the gonads for it will allow you to cut some extra weight off the roof :scaredtoss: Otherwise will weigh maybe 500 grams more than the plug and give you a full CF roof :)

Make a roof skin, strike a deal with tramroad/PA for installation - job done!

Phil was asking about the CF roof for his pickup when I saw him last :idea:

Been thinking about this a lot since we spoke about it and its super complicated to make the mould, it would have to be cut up and joined back together with the thickness of the carbon fibre and resin taken into account to get it to sit over the existing roof skin. Not an easy job and very labour intensive.

I'd use this stuff;

& this stuff;

With the edges of the part finishing in the rain gutters where the actual roof does

Have you got an extremely rough idea of a price in mind?

I'd need to do two, 1 for the 5g and 1 for the 4g as I'm pretty sure the roofs are different.

I have some tircks in the bag to get a real nice weave finish too :)

Just measured the roof and it's 1.05m x 1.00m. I've also just found my dissertation with all the best layer orientations :rock:

At a guess I'd go with it being around £250 - £300 to cover the full roof with several layers of fibre to allow sunroof delete or around £150 if you just wanted a skin for your existing roof.

if you did a plug i would assume 4ths and 5ths would be the same due to the fact you can fit a 5g sunroof in a 4g ;)
