Honda ATF

I've just bought the wife an auto civic but it needs an ATF fluid change.

It appears that Hondas own Z-1 as now been replaced with DW-1, and it's soooooo expensive, well that I can find anyway.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced seller of either of this stuff?

The best I can find for 4 litres is about £52 plus shipping. Yet on ebay.com it's sold for $30 for 6 litres.

If I was to follow Hondas guidelines for a total fluid change (12 litres) it would come to £160 ish.

I used Z-1 the last time i did a fluid change , but just bought 4 or 5 litres.

I didn't realise Z-1 had been replaced.

Toadster, where did you get it and how much?

If anyone is interested, I found this on Honda Tech, it's for a complete fluid change, which I need to do as it appears that someone has previously filled the new car with non Honda fluid.


The following is exerpted from Honda Service News article A08010A, January 2008.

(1) Set the parking brake, and raise the vehicle on a lift.

(2) Drain the transmission and refill it with Honda Genuine ATF DW-1. Refer to the applicable S/M or to ISIS for details.

(3) Start the engine, shift into Drive, and release the parking brake.

(4) Push down on the accelerator pedal to raise the vehicle speed to 2500 rpm

(a) If the trans shifts past 2nd gear, go to step 5.

(b) If the transmission won't shift past 2nd gear, keep the engine speed at 2500 rpm shift from Drive to Neutral and back to Drive. Then go to step 5.

(5) Make sure that the trans shifts through all the forward gears and goes into torque converter lockup.

(6) Let off the accelerator pedal, and press the brake pedal to drop the vehicle speed to zero. Shift into Reverse and then into Neutral.

(7) Shift into Drive, and repeat steps 4 through 6 four (4) more times.

(8) Set the parking brake, and repeat steps 2 through 6 two (2) more times.

(9) Drain the transmission again after the third cycle and reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.

(11) Refill the transmission with Honda Genuine ATF DW-1.

Thanks Ratty, that's the cheapest I've found it so far (a previous link of yours).

Given the cost I think I'll just drop the fluid and replace, rather than a full flush, and see how it goes. On the plus side the civic bible tells me I only need 2.7 litres. A total of £43 inc VAT and shipping. Robbing buggers.

I bought mine direct from my local Honda dealership and took it to my local garage to do the job during my full service.

It was a few years back so i can't remember what it cost at the time , but i wanted the proper stuff as it had a full Honda service history , so would have ATF in it already .

I read a US website a while ago and most peops didn't recomend a full fluid flush anyway. , can't remember the reason now.
