this is what ive wanted to put in for a while but not sure if its a good idea as the motor has always been ran on 10 40 semi syn and is not far off the 100K mark. that wouldnt bother me but i know semi syn isn't up to the job of track days which is why i want to start using fully syn. what do you guys think?
no problem at all. being a fully synth, will retain its viscosity a bit better at the high temp so good for an engine with a few k's on it and especially if you're going to be tracking it then you want a fully syn. the 5W means it'll circulate round your engine quicker upon start-up giving more protection when cold. If you're worried about compatibility of going from a part syn to a fully, or from a 10W-40 to a 5W-40, that's not an issue :)

no worries cheers for the reply.
all i was concerned about was going from a semi syn to fully syn as the motor has a few K's on the clock and have heard a few people say its not such a good idea on an old engine. think ill give it a go and see how she does as like you say semi syn isn't designed for track use.

that's carried over from scare stories on *really* old engines where new synthetic oils would dislodge deposits, which would either cause leaks or block oilways. doesn't really apply to anything built in the last 30 years tho :)

Norton Way Honda seems to have switched back to 10/40 semi-synth, so they're all running on that now.

They were (IIRC) using that (Magnatec) back in the early noughties, when the cars were new. When they switched to SLX 0/30 synth, it was like bloody water & just leaked out.

So far, only the S2000's ever thrown a rod, but we never actually discovered the cause, other than some do that sometimes.

I always stock up on it when halfords have it on half price, plus I use my trade discount card on the offer too, £16 for 4 litres 8-)
